Alice Gomez DeCosta

In Memoriam

Against all odds, Alice DeCosta thrived while fighting multiple forms and stages of cancer for over 40 years. When she was convinced it was her time, she bowed out of life at her home on a date she predetermined. How Alice timed her death remains a mystery…

Alice always enjoyed spending time with loved ones, especially sharing laughs together, and always giving great advice (but only when asked). She cared about the future generations and was concerned about global warming and her personal observations on the decline of human health.  She was shocked by the transformations she observed over the decades, from her highschool days when nearly everyone was fit, to the 2020s when most people were fat.  She was a great inspiration for the research that has provided the backbone of the #eatlessforearth movement.

Alice was serious enough to earn a master’s degree in early childhood education and silly enough to graduate from circus college. To know her was to know her talents: her cooking was chef-level, her paintings were worthy enough to adorn her impeccable house; just don’t ask her to sing! Her greatest talents revolved around warmth and charisma. Alice’s beauty poured from her soul making those in her presence feel special and loved. Maybe it was because her spirit was so powerful: she was the type to go out for a lovely brunch after receiving a frightening death sentence. It’s hard to develop that kind of poise.

Alice was born and raised in Jersey City by her parents Jose and Delores. She became an educator at a time when female teachers were banned from wearing pants or sitting alone at a cocktail bar. Back in the 1960’s, she taught kindergarten with an innovative approach based on communication skills, mutual respect, and kindness. During her four decade career, she impacted the lives of hundreds of children and their families.

Remember Alice by helping a child, hosting a healthy dinner , or toasting her with a big glass of wine… and supporting the Eat Less For Earth movement.
